A bridge from A to B
When I do get out of bed early to work out or write, I feel very confident all day, like I’m wired into my values and my purpose. I feel a little like a rock star. There’s a prayer on page 836 of The Book of Common Prayer that includes a line that describes this rock star feeling for me:
“We thank you for setting us at tasks which demand our best efforts, and for leading us to accomplishments which SATISFY and DELIGHT us.”
Ready for the challenge
Unsinkably sinkable
The COVID-19 cases are carrying into scary territory. It felt somewhat manageable two weeks ago. Now I’m feeling very concerned. How can I shore up those habits that draw me and my loved ones toward health, safety, inner peace, even joy? How to continue living well while also understanding and responding to the science we see on charts and from Johns Hopkins?
As things seem to be sinking deeper and deeper, how can we invest in remaining spiritually unsinkable?
I’m never quite sure what to call that space within us that houses and fosters resilience or spiritual unsinkability. I often refer to it in church conversations as the space or sense that “it is well with my soul.” If you do not know this hymn, check out the lyrics.

Stewardship of This One Life
When our backyard apricot tree in Chino, California produced about 10 times as much fruit as we could eat or turn into jam, my mom and I took Stater Bros. bags full of fruit to every doorstep around. We handed bags of fruit to friends at church, and to strangers who were lucky enough to cross our apricot-laden path. When our neighbor had more zucchini than he could consume, zucchini appeared at our house. We might come home to persimmon, kumquats, tamales, or plums on our doormat. Sharing an abundance of food seems so natural.
Sharing from our checkbook seems less natural. It is so disconnected from our lived experience that it takes on a different meaning than passing someone a few tamales. Because the bank account does not rot and stink and attract fruit flies after several days on the kitchen counter, we do not have the same urge to move it along to someone who will enjoy it while it is enjoyable. And yet, we are called to be generous…
A Tactical Week
My back aches, my hands are sore from opening boxes, and my mind refuses to focus. Yep, I just survived another move! Dave and I have moved together 6 times in our 25 years together. We moved his mom three years ago, and Aunt Betty’s move is #8.
It’s now Sunday evening and my house is quiet except for the running of the dishwasher. Dave is taking a final, kids are relaxing in their rooms, and I’m looking at my Panda Planner plotting my week ahead.
This week will be a tactical week, too - in a very different way.

Why clear clutter? Why sort all the stuff in the garage?

Dumpster beginnings
Today a big dumpster landed on the grass alongside our driveway. We have hired a construction team to transform our basement, making our home ready for my parents to share it with us. And the construction began with a big, empty dumpster.
It’s a vivid symbol that when we are making a transition, some things have to get tossed out. What do I want to strip away and throw out to be ready for what is ahead: my need for privacy? my demand that my parents remain robust and active instead of deteriorating with age?

Clarity is a Kindness
If it matters, and it is not an emergency - take some time to get clear. It will be a profound gift, a kindness.
